MarkScope Legal
Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how MarkScope handles information when you use the MarkScope app and the MarkScope website. MarkScope is designed as a local-first Markdown app with core reading features and optional Pro features such as plain-text editing, export, a dedicated MarkScope Workspace folder in iCloud Drive on supported iOS devices, and optional AI tools. MarkScope does not require an account, does not include advertising SDKs, and does not send your document contents to MarkScope-operated servers.
1. Information MarkScope Processes
The current app and website may process the following categories of information:
- Files and folders you explicitly choose to open through the system file picker.
- Document content rendered, previewed, exported, or edited locally on your device after you open a file.
- Local app settings such as appearance, language, and reader font size.
- Locally stored app metadata such as recent files, starred files, file-content cache entries, iOS folder-access bookmarks, Workspace preferences, Workspace conversation history, Pro purchase status, and AI provider settings.
- API keys you choose to store for supported AI providers. On Apple devices, those keys are stored in the iOS Keychain.
- AI prompts and relevant document content may be sent directly from your device to the third-party provider you configure when you use AI features, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter.
- Basic website request logs generated by the web server or hosting environment, such as IP address, user agent, requested path, and request time.
2. How the App Uses Local Data
In the current implementation, MarkScope stores data locally to make the product usable offline and to reduce repeated prompts. This includes recent file lists, starred files, appearance preferences, language selection, font-size settings, iOS folder bookmark grants, browser-session file imports, Workspace state, Pro purchase state, AI session history, and file-content cache entries tied to file path and modification time.
This local data is used only to operate the app on your device. It is not used to build advertising profiles, and it is not transmitted to MarkScope servers by the current app code.
3. Files and Permissions
MarkScope reads files and folders only after you explicitly choose them or grant access through platform file pickers and bookmark flows. On iOS, the app uses security-scoped bookmarks for files or folders you select. On Android, the app relies on system-managed file access. If you enable Workspace on a supported iOS device, MarkScope also uses a dedicated MarkScope Workspace folder in iCloud Drive. These permissions are used solely to open, edit, organize, preview, export, and manage the content you request inside the app.
4. AI Features and Third-Party Providers
AI features are optional. If you enable them, MarkScope stores your AI provider configuration locally on your device. On Apple devices, supported AI provider API keys are stored in the iOS Keychain. When you run an AI feature, your prompts and relevant document content may be sent directly from your device to the third-party provider you configure, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter. Those requests are processed under that provider's terms and privacy policy, not by MarkScope.
MarkScope does not operate its own AI relay service for these features and does not receive the request payloads through a MarkScope server.
5. Data MarkScope Does Not Currently Collect
Based on the current codebase, MarkScope does not currently collect the following for its own analytics or marketing purposes:
- Account registration data
- Advertising identifiers
- Analytics event streams
- Crash-reporting payloads sent to third-party observability platforms
- Cloud backups of your document contents to MarkScope infrastructure
6. Website Data
The MarkScope website is currently a static marketing site. It does not include account creation, payment processing, or built-in contact forms in the current codebase. Because the site is self-hosted, the server or reverse proxy may still create standard operational logs. Those logs are typically used for security, availability, and abuse prevention.
If analytics, cookies, newsletters, forms, crash reporting, or hosted APIs are added later, this policy must be updated before those features go live.
7. Sharing
MarkScope does not currently sell or share personal information for targeted advertising. Limited technical information may be processed through infrastructure involved in app distribution, website hosting, standard server logging, in-app purchase handling by Apple or Google, or AI requests that you intentionally send to a configured supported third-party provider. The current app code does not transmit document contents to MarkScope servers.
8. Retention
Local app data remains on your device until you clear it, remove it, revoke access, or uninstall the app. This can include Workspace metadata, AI settings, AI session history, and secure local credentials that you previously saved in the app. On Apple devices, this includes AI provider API keys stored in the iOS Keychain. Website server logs, if enabled, may be retained for a limited operational period determined by your hosting setup.
9. Your Choices
- You can choose which files or folders to open.
- You can revoke folder or file access through operating-system controls where supported.
- You can stop using AI features at any time and remove stored provider keys from the app.
- You can delete files from the dedicated MarkScope Workspace folder in iCloud Drive if you use Workspace on a supported iOS device.
- You can remove recent files, unstar files, or uninstall the app to clear local app data stored by MarkScope.
- You can avoid visiting the website if you do not want routine web-server logging to occur.
10. Children
MarkScope is not designed to knowingly collect personal information from children through accounts or direct user-submitted profiles. The current app is a local-first Markdown app and the current website is a static product site.
11. Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated as MarkScope adds new features or services. When material changes are made, the effective date above will be updated.
